Repair & Maintenance Standard
Cars need clean air filters to run properly. A clogged or dirty filter will restrict airflow to the engine, causing a loss of power and fuel economy. How often you need to replace your car’s air filter depends on the make of your vehicle, driving conditions, and type of filter. Many automakers recommend replacing it at least once a year or every 12,000 miles.
If you live in a dusty area or do a lot of off-roading, you may need to replace your air filter more often. Some cars have cabin air filters that clean the air that comes into the interior of the vehicle. These also need to be replaced periodically, depending on driving conditions and the type of filter.
How to Clean and Replace an Air Filter
Cleaning an air filter is simple and only takes a few minutes. You’ll need a screwdriver and a bowl or bucket. Many newer vehicles have a disposable air filter that can’t be cleaned and must be replaced when dirty. These are usually located inside a housing under the hood.
To clean a reusable air filter:
1. Open the hood and locate the air filter housing. This is usually on the side of the engine near the fender well.
2. Remove the cover of the housing. This is usually held on by clips or screws.
3. Remove the old air filter and discard it.
4. Inspect the housing for dirt and debris. If necessary, clean it with a brush or compressed air.
5. Place the new filter in the housing and replace the cover.
6. Close the hood.
Replacing an air filter is a simple and inexpensive way to keep your car running properly. Regular replacement will also improve fuel economy and protect your engine from damage.
With just a few minutes and a few tools, you can easily clean or replace your car’s air filter. Be sure to check your owner’s manual for specific instructions on your vehicle.
