General Motors Corporation is one of the largest automotive companies in the world. GM started its first plant in Detroit, Michigan, in 1908 with a simple goal: to make a better car. The company has since reached its present size and grown into an immense corporation that operates through various subsidiaries. It currently employs over 250,000 people worldwide and has factories around the world with its headquarters located in Detroit.
GM vehicles are praised for their cutting-edge technology, style, and innovation. However, many of these features come at a price and the ones that don’t tend to be found in GM’s high-end models. In my opinion, this is a shame because GM produces some fantastic cars that could benefit greatly from some of the technology they’ve developed. One of those technologies is fuel efficiency through variable valve timing combined with direct injection (VVT).
Why they are powerful
GM’s latest generation of powerful, high-output engines is mated to one of two gearbox types depending upon their design: the new eight or nine-speed Hydra-Matic or the tried and true six-speed.
While both gearbox types are very efficient and provide a smoother ride than that of a manual, it is the six-speed gearbox that comes with a powerful engine like the Corvette’s LT1 3.6-liter V8. This six-speed gearbox will also come with both DCT (Direct-Shift) and TAPshift transmission settings for the first time in a Chevrolet Camaro.
The ‘LT1’ variant of the 6.2L V8 is a direct-injected LSA engine that has been engineered to produce an incredible 455 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The LSA engine is a work of art. It is incredibly smooth, quiet, and incredibly powerful, making it the perfect match for the new 2015 6-speed manual transmission. Combined with the TAPshift and DCT settings, the new Camaro will also offer a faster shifting experience for drivers who aren’t partial to a manual gearbox.
Conclusion
In my opinion, the new six-speed manual transmission with TAPshift and DCT options is a powerful combination for the 2015 Chevrolet Camaro. Although it isn’t as powerful as the Corvette’s naturally aspirated LT1 V8, it provides a smoother ride, more refinement, and improved fuel economy.
